Day tripper
As the tourism industry begins its venture into a “new normal”, staycations are set to be more popular than ever this summer.
If you’re thinking of paying a visit to the South Downs and exploring the beautiful countryside around us, a day trip to a historic local market town is a must.
We’ve put together some ideas and inspiration on things to see and do during your visit to the market towns within a short drive of Woodlands Retreat B&B…
Petersfield
Distance from Woodlands Retreat B&B: 8 miles
The main square, overlooked by the imposing equestrian statue of King William III, is the heart of this Norman market town, which today boasts numerous independent shops and eateries to enjoy.
For families, a visit to Petersfield Heath Lake is ideal - whether you want to idle away some time enjoying an ice cream in the sunshine or hire a pedalo and venture out onto the water.
Bishop’s Waltham
Distance from Woodlands Retreat B&B: 10 miles
This medieval market town is steeped in history, largely connected with Bishop’s Waltham Palace - which hosted many royal visitors - and also links with the Napoleonic wars.
Today, you can still gain a glimpse of the palace ruins, and also explore the well-preserved medieval high street - which offers plenty of shops and eateries to tempt the modern-day visitor.
If you’re looking to walk off a pub lunch, the Bishop’s Waltham trail is a good place to start.
Alresford
Distance from Woodlands Retreat B&B: 16 miles
Perhaps best-known as the UK’s watercress capital, this idyllic Georgian town is well worth a visit.
A good selection of independent shops, pubs and tea rooms offer plenty to explore, but the real highlight is a visit to the Watercress Line, where you can take a step back in time and enjoy the sights and sounds of the Hampshire countryside on a steam-powered trip along this historic railway line (pre-booking essential).
