A delicate blend of formal and informal planting, the garden at Hinton Ampner is divided into a series of tranquil garden ‘rooms’. There are borders bursting with colour, a walled garden and winding paths, and stunning panoramic views across the South Downs.
But this garden is best-known for its stunning roses – more than 90 varieties in all – that offer fragrance and colour well into August.
For those keen to stretch their legs, there are several walking trails which offer the opportunity to explore more of the estate and parkland.

Gilbert White’s House & Gardens

Follow in the footsteps of pioneering 18th century naturalist Gilbert White in the picturesque parkland and carefully-restored gardens behind his house in Selborne.
Quirky features and creative planting are evident throughout the garden, with many elements designed by Gilbert White himself.
The wine-pipe seat, the cut-out statue of Hercules and two hahas plus the herb garden, kitchen garden and ‘six quarters’ mean there’s plenty to offer everyone from the seasoned plantsman to weekend visitor.
Best for: Gardeners – With its 18th century planting, this garden is sure to interest avid gardeners and anyone interested in more unusual plants.
Distance from Woodlands Retreat B&B: 8 miles
This tranquil garden, tucked away behind Petersfield High Street, is a true hidden gem, offering a place of peace and calm in the heart of this bustling market town.
Featuring a small knot garden, a topiary walk in an orchard area under-planted with wild flowers and a rose bower with shrub roses, this diverse garden offers something for everyone.
Best for: Photographers – This popular garden packs a wide variety of plants into a small space, offering the keen photographer plenty of opportunities to practise close-up shots throughout the seasons.
