The summer heat may be fading away, but the local countryside is still a hive of activity as we head towards autumn.
Harvest season offers the opportunity to gain an insight into rural life, learn more about local produce and discover how food and farming help shape the landscape around us.
These upcoming events, both in the heart of the countryside and on the coast, provide the perfect chance to do just that…
Emsworth British Food Fortnight
22nd September – 7th October
Distance from Woodlands Retreat B&B: 10 miles
Community, education and celebration are at the heart of this award-winning event, which features tastings, special menus, new product launches and demonstrations.
The focal point of this year’s event is the Big Feast Weekend (29th-30th September), during which there’s a whole host of activities planned, such as the Emsworth Beer and Cider Festival, A ‘Thought for Food’ Local Showcase Market and the Emsworth Apple Pressing Day.
Hampshire Harvest Weekend at Winchester Cathedral
6th - 7th October
Distance from Woodlands Retreat B&B: 18 miles
This action-packed family event aims to celebrate Hampshire’s food and farming, with everything from vintage tractors and horse-drawn wagon rides to live music and children’s activities.
There’s also a special Evensong service celebrating harvest, taking place in the Cathedral at 3.30pm on the Sunday afternoon.
Autumn Countryside Show at the Weald and Downland Living Museum
6th – 7th October

Celebrate the end of the harvest at this popular seasonal show, which celebrates and showcases many traditional countryside activities.
Traditional working demonstrations, such as heavy horses and vintage tractors ploughing and steam-powered threshing, take centre stage. There’s also woodland and rural craft demonstrations, displays and competitions.
The event also includes a Horticultural Show, plus crafts, demonstrations and food and drink.
